JOEED- GenAI Policy

Policy on AI Tools, Authorship, and Academic Integrity

1. Definition of Authorship

In accordance with international standards for peer-reviewed publishing including Committee on Publishing Ethics COPE and Higher Education Commission HEC guidelines, authorship is a human-centric designation. The Journal of Education and Educational Development (JOEED) maintains that Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, Large Language Models (LLMs), or similar technologies do not meet the criteria for authorship.

Authorship necessitates specific human responsibilities that cannot be delegated to software, including:

  • Accountability: Each author is personally responsible for the accuracy, original thought, and integrity of every portion of the work.
  • Intellectual Contribution: Authors must provide substantial contributions to the conception, design, acquisition, or analysis of data.
  • Final Approval: All human co-authors must have the capacity to review, approve, and defend the final manuscript and its submission.

2. JOEED Compliance and HEC Regulations

JOEED strictly adheres to the standards prescribed by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) regarding academic honesty. To ensure the highest level of integrity:

  • Compulsory Screening: Every submitted manuscript is rigorously screened through Turnitin and advanced AI-detection software.
  • AI Zero-Tolerance Policy: In alignment with HEC directives, any attempt to present AI-generated text as original human scholarship without disclosure is considered academic misconduct.

3. Mandatory Disclosure Requirements

While the use of AI as an author is prohibited, the journal acknowledges that authors may use AI-powered tools for technical editing (e.g., grammar checks) or data processing. If any generative AI or AI-assisted tools have been utilized in the production of the manuscript, authors must:

  1. State Usage Clearly: Provide a formal disclosure at the end of the article, preceding the references section.
  2. Detail the Application: Specify which tool was used (including version/model) and the exact nature of its application (e.g., "AI was utilized solely for refining the English syntax of the literature review").

4. Integrity Verification

Authors are warned that the use of AI does not absolve them of the responsibility for factual errors or plagiarized content generated by the tool. JOEED reserves the right to reject manuscripts or retract published work if undisclosed AI usage is detected during the peer-review or post-publication process.
